Customer Reviews
This review is for the “12 Inch Aviation Snips, Long Straight Cut Tin Snips.” I had 23 old and expired credit cards, and was at my wit’s end what to do with them. I even tried a pair of 10″ heavy-duty Fiskars Pro Power Arc Shop Shears, but that required a lot of pressure to cut these 1 mm thick cards, and would have destroyed the scissors. Then I came across these, and gave them a try. They cut through 21 of the credit cards (1 mm, 0.039″ thick) like butter. But two metal cards (both from Chase) required an extraordinary amount of pressure. Nevertheless, these snips did finally cut them. These snips are extremely well-made, solid, and useful; they are even aesthetically pleasing. I have since used them on a 2 mm thick plastic sheet, medium-sized thin can, 18 guage copper electrical cord, etc. just to try them, and they work beautifully.I should add that, I wear large to extra large gloves, and it seems to me that the snips would handle better if the rubber grips were about an inch longer. But, I’m happy with the purchase. You can’t beat these snips for functionality, quality, and value.
I purchased this for my dad, he likes to do some garage DIY, this snips is long enough. Cutting power strong.

Customer Reviews
Dont know yet havent used the snips cant really say how they work out , but i will say this they feel great at this point , looks like a great tool , cant wait to use them for the first time …
The aviation 10″ snip is just that – a snip. The opening is not wide, just like the picture indicate. I purchase it because the description said it also cut rubber. I needed it to cut a piece of lawn edging and after much snipping and turning and snipping it cut through. Check the picture before you purchase because it show the true opening for the snip. Stupidly I through away the box for returning it.Also it is very heavy.

Customer Reviews
Great tool. I had a pair of these that I used for over 15 years before they ever started to lose their age. These are ideal for cutting vinyl siding and metal. It makes cutting long angles and cutting around outside wall sockets so easy. I would not suggest these for cutting thick metal, like corrugated roof, metal, but use them as their intended, and you will not be disappointed.
Ordered one set and the screws holding down the cutting sheer blades were stripped out, making it impossible to replace blades if they were to become damaged. I contacted Amazon and they sent me out a replacement set the next day.

I used these to cut some metal mesh for a landscape project. They cut through it like butter. They are very sharp with a fine edge on the blades. I still have some thin gauge metal hurricane panels to cut by hand, as long as I keep them sharp I’m sure they’ll do the job.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use regular tin snips for vinyl siding?
A: Yes, most tin snips work well on vinyl siding. However, vinyl-specific snips (like Midwest MWT-127SV) often have blade geometries optimized to prevent cracking or chipping in the vinyl, especially in cold weather. General-purpose snips will get the job done but may require more care to avoid damaging the material.
Q: What’s the difference between straight, left, and right cut tin snips?
A: Straight-cut snips (yellow handles traditionally) make straight lines and wide curves to both sides. Left-cut snips (red) cut curves to the left, and right-cut snips (green) cut curves to the right. For vinyl siding, you’ll mostly use straight cuts, but having a left or right cutter helps with tight curves around windows and obstacles. The HURRICANE 3-Piece Set (#9) gives you all three.
Q: How do I maintain my tin snips?
A: Keep blades clean and dry to prevent rust. Occasionally wipe with a light oil. If blades dull, you can sometimes sharpen them with a fine file, but many modern snips (like HURRICANE and Malco models) have replaceable blades, which is easier. Avoid using them on materials beyond their rating (e.g., don’t cut thick steel with snips rated for 20-gauge).
Q: Should I get 10-inch or 12-inch tin snips for vinyl siding?
Q: Can tin snips cut through thick materials like gutters or roofing?
A: Most tin snips for vinyl siding are rated for 18-20 gauge steel (about 0.040-0.050 inches). Thicker materials like 16-gauge gutters or corrugated roofing may exceed their capacity and risk damage. For heavy-duty metal, look at snips specifically rated for thicker gauges or consider powered shears. The Klein Tools 89556 (#2) handles up to 28-gauge stainless steel, which is quite thin.
Choosing the right tin snips for vinyl siding doesn’t have to be complicated. By focusing on blade material, handle comfort, and cutting capacity, you can find a tool that makes your siding project smooth and efficient. Our top pick, the 12-Inch Aviation Snips, combines durability, power, and thoughtful features like the double-lever design and etched scale. But whether you opt for the professional-grade Klein Tools, the budget-friendly 10-Inch Aviation Snips, or the vinyl-specialized Midwest MWT-127SV, you’ll be well-equipped for clean, precise cuts.
