How to Clean Tinted Car Windows Without Damaging the Film
To clean tinted windows, use an ammonia-free cleaner (or mild soap and water) and two clean microfiber towels. Spray the towel, not the window, wipe gently in straight lines, then buff dry with the second towel. Avoid ammonia, vinegar-heavy mixes, paper towels, abrasive pads and razor blades on the film side. If the tint is new, wait about a week before cleaning the inside.
Window tint is a thin film on the inside of the glass. It is tougher than it looks, but harsh chemicals and rough tools can scratch, haze or lift it over time. The outside of the glass has no film, so you can clean it normally.

What You Need
| Use | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Ammonia-free glass cleaner | Ammonia-based household glass cleaners |
| Mild soap and distilled water | Strong vinegar or alcohol-heavy mixes on the film |
| Soft microfiber towels | Paper towels and newspaper |
| Waffle-weave towel for buffing | Abrasive sponges and scrub pads |
| Plastic tool for stuck bits (outside only) | Razor blades on the film side |
How to Clean Tinted Windows Step by Step
Give new tint about a week before cleaning the inside of the glass. See how long window tint takes to cure.
Choose a cleaner labeled tint-safe or ammonia-free, or mix a few drops of mild soap in distilled water.
Lightly mist a clean microfiber towel. Spraying the glass can let liquid run under the film edges.
Wipe in straight lines with light pressure. Do not scrub hard or use the rough side of a sponge.
Use a dry, clean microfiber or waffle-weave towel to remove streaks.
Do not pick at or scrape the top edge of the film, and keep seat belt buckles and rings away from the glass.
Why Ammonia Is Bad for Tint
Ammonia can slowly break down the film’s adhesive and some dyes, leading to haze, purple fading and bubbles over time. If you already see those problems, read why tint turns purple and window tint bubbles.
Cleaning Tips for the Rear Window
The rear window has defroster lines and often the film is applied over them. Wipe along the lines, not across them, with light pressure. Never scrape. If old film needs to come off, follow how to remove window tint.
- Clean the inside of the glass in the shade so the cleaner does not dry into streaks.
- Wash microfiber towels without fabric softener; softener causes streaks.
- Lower the window an inch to clean the top edge of the glass, but do not wipe across the film edge roughly.
- Use distilled water in hard-water areas to avoid spots.
Clean tinted windows with an ammonia-free cleaner and two microfiber towels, spraying the towel rather than the film and wiping gently. Avoid ammonia, paper towels, abrasives and razors on the film side, and wait about a week before cleaning new tint.
