- The smaller pliers can feel a bit delicate compared to the larger ones.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: Pretty good quality for a cheaper set. I like the assortment of sizes.
Customer Review: I bought this set to remove a snap ring from a wheel bearing, and also because we occasionally need snap ring pliers and didn’t have any on hand. The tools did the job without any issues. They aren’t heavy-duty, but they’re well made for occasional use. We ended up using four different pliers from the set, so I’m glad I bought the full kit instead of purchasing them one at a time.

If you primarily need reliable, heavy-duty pliers for automotive hubs, transmissions, or differentials, this set is a fantastic, no-fuss choice that won’t let you down.

Pros:
- Extremely sturdy, professional-grade forged steel construction.
- Excellent ergonomics and spring action for reduced hand fatigue.
- Perfect size and strength for most automotive hub and shaft applications.
- Nickel plating offers good corrosion resistance.
Cons:
- Limited to 9-inch size; not suitable for very deep or very small applications.
- The set only includes straight and bent tips, no other sizes.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: Nice looking tool case, the pliers are quality made as well. They all fitted my rings and AC Hubs in the Toyota. Very functional, easy to use for a very versatile set of pliers. It bends lock washers like butter! Super durable tips!
Customer Review: Good quality product and served its purpose perfectly. Received in a timely manner.
3. Neiko 02130A Snap Ring Plier Set
This is the go-to budget-friendly option for those large, stubborn snap rings found on tractors, trucks, and industrial equipment. The 16-inch length provides massive leverage, and the spring ratchet locking mechanism holds tension securely. The interchangeable tips (straight, 45°, 90°) are made from hardened steel, making this set surprisingly capable for its price point. It’s a workhorse for big jobs.
Key Features That Stand Out
- ✓ 16-Inch Extra Long Design: Provides maximum leverage for large, tight snap rings.
- ✓ Spring Ratchet Lock: Securely holds against circle tension, freeing up your hands.
- ✓ Interchangeable Tips: Includes straight, 45-degree, and 90-degree tips for all-angle access.
- ✓ Hardened, Heat-Treated Steel: Durable construction for heavy-duty applications.
- ✓ Includes Both Internal & External: One frame works for both types with tip changes.
Why We Recommend It
For the price, you get an incredible amount of capability. The long handles and ratcheting lock make compressing huge snap rings—like those on tractor axles or truck transmissions—much easier than with shorter pliers. It’s the best value if your primary need is tackling large-diameter rings where leverage is everything. The quality is more than adequate for periodic heavy use.
Best For
Farm equipment owners, truck mechanics, and anyone dealing with large-diameter external snap rings on axles, transmissions, or industrial machinery. It’s the economical solution for those occasional but demanding big-ring jobs.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Exceptional leverage due to 16-inch length.
- Ratcheting lock mechanism is very effective for sustained pressure.
- Great price for heavy-duty performance on large rings.
- Interchangeable tips add versatility.
Cons:
- The tips can be a bit thick for very small or tight internal rings.
- Switching between internal and external requires changing tips, which isn’t as quick as a knob adjustment.
- Can feel unwieldy in tight engine compartments.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: Worked perfect for removing and reinstalling big snap rings from my tractor. Recommended if you have the need for them. Nice case to keep all parts together.
Customer Review: Tool worked perfectly for what I needed it for. I was trying to remove a large snap ring to rebuild the torque tube from my C6 Corvette. After several failed attempts I ordered these. Once these arrived I had the snap ring removed on the first try. They are heavy duty and work great for large snap rings. Would highly recommend.
4. 38700 Spindle Snap Ring Pliers
This set is a specialized tool designed specifically for the notoriously difficult spindle snap rings on Ford Super Duty trucks (2007+). The narrow tips are engineered to fit into the tight, awkward spaces of front wheel hubs. The ratcheting lock mechanism is supposed to provide the necessary force, but user feedback is mixed regarding its durability under extreme load. It’s a niche tool for a very specific, frustrating job.
Key Features That Stand Out
- ✓ Narrow Tip Design: Specifically shaped to access the confined area of Ford Super Duty spindle snap rings.
- ✓ Ratcheting Lock Mechanism: Designed to maintain compression on the ring.
- ✓ Heavy-Duty Steel: Made from rigid steel with a black corrosion-resistant coating.
- ✓ Internal & External: Set includes tools for both types of rings encountered on these trucks.
- ✓ Automotive-Specific: Targeted solution for a known problematic repair.
Why We Recommend It
We recommend this with a significant caveat. If you own a 2007 or newer Ford F-250/F-350 Super Duty and need to do front hub work, this is the tool marketed for the job. The design *should* work perfectly. However, due to concerning reviews about tips bending on first use, we suggest this only as a last-resort, low-budget option for that specific application. For the same price, a more general heavy-duty set might be a safer bet for long-term use.
Best For
Owners of Ford Super Duty trucks (2007+) who need a dedicated, inexpensive tool for the sole purpose of changing front wheel hubs and are willing to accept the risk of potential tool failure based on other user experiences.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Narrow tips are designed for the tight Ford Super Duty hub application.
- Inexpensive compared to premium brand-specific tools.
- Includes both internal and external pliers for the job.
Cons:
- Durability is highly questionable; multiple reports of tips bending or breaking on first use.
- Construction feels flimsy compared to other heavy-duty options.
- Very niche use; not practical for general work.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: These are absolutely junk! Don’t buy! I’ve had these sitting in the toolbox for a while and just pulled them out to pull the snap ring on a 2016 F-250 front hub and first attempt bent one of the ends, I flipped it over and it bent back but also bent the other side, I pulled the ends off of my internal pair and they bent as well on the first attempt. Now I have two broken pairs of pliers on the first use and they are marketed for these hub snap rings on this exact truck!
Customer Review: Used them for their intended use-Front locking hubs on a super duty. Worked
5. Hiltex 02016 Snap Ring Plier Set
The Hiltex set is a direct competitor to the Neiko, offering 16-inch heavy-duty pliers with a ratcheting lock and multiple tip angles. It’s designed for large, stubborn circlips. However, user reports indicate some design quirks, such as tips that may face the “wrong” direction for some applications and potential issues with screw quality. It’s a powerful tool that gets the job done but may require user adaptation or minor modifications.
Key Features That Stand Out
- ✓ 16-Inch Long Handles: Provides significant mechanical advantage for large rings.
- ✓ Spring Ratchet Locking: Locks in place to maintain compression.
- ✓ Multiple Tip Angles: Includes straight, 45°, and 90° tips for versatile access.
- ✓ Hardened Heat-Treated Steel: Tips and frame built for durability.
- ✓ Black Oxide Finish: Helps prevent corrosion.
Why We Recommend It
This set is recommended for the user who needs brute force for large rings and is handy with tools. The core function—providing massive leverage—works well. The reported issues with tip orientation and screw quality are concerns, but many users find them perfectly serviceable after minor adjustments or simply by using them as intended. It’s a capable budget heavy-duty option if you’re aware of its potential quirks.
Best For
DIYers and mechanics on a tight budget who need to tackle large external snap rings (e.g., on truck axles, agricultural equipment) and are comfortable with tools that might need a slight tweak or two to work optimally.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Excellent leverage for large, stuck snap rings.
- Ratcheting lock works effectively.
- Very affordable for a 16-inch heavy-duty set.
- Multiple tip angles provide some flexibility.
Cons:
- Tip orientation may not be ideal for all applications (some face inward).
- Quality control issues reported (e.g., screws rounding out).
- Tips can be thick, limiting use on smaller rings.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: These Pliers are very big boys and they did work to remove a snap ring that broke 4 other sets of pliers. One issue, however, is that the tips are facing the wrong way. When I was cranking on them to remove the huge snap ring off my truck, they would keep slipping off. I could reverse the tips, but then they wouldn’t close in close enough together to completely compress the snap ring. The other issue is that one of the screws rounded out when I tried to remove it and now I have to drill it out. Otherwise, these are beefy tools that work well. Just need to make some modifications and understand that you bought a bargain set of Pliers. I’m sure if you bought them off “The Truck” , They’d work perfectly, but also cost 4-5 times as much..
Customer Review: Just what I needed to remove center cartridge from turbo charger very stubborn worked excellent. I broke two smaller pairs and they didn’t even budge the circle clip. You need these heavy duty ones. They got the job done quickly and safely.
6. 4-Piece 7-Inch Snap Ring Pliers Set
This compact 7-inch set is ideal for smaller, more precise jobs in tight engine bays. The shorter length offers better control and maneuverability for internal rings in transmission pans, valve covers, or small appliances. The integrally formed heads and strong springs are designed for precision work. It’s a great secondary set for when the big pliers just won’t fit.
Key Features That Stand Out
- ✓ Compact 7-Inch Length: Perfect for tight spaces and delicate internal rings.
- ✓ 4-Piece Variety: Includes straight internal, 90-degree internal, straight external, and 90-degree external.
- ✓ 45# Steel Construction: High-hardness steel for durability in a smaller package.
- ✓ Integrally Formed Head: One-piece construction for strength at the joint.
- ✓ Strong Springs: Provides smooth, reliable opening action.
Why We Recommend It
Not every snap ring job needs a 16-inch lever. For smaller, more intricate work—like inside a transmission or on a motorcycle—this 7-inch set is a dream. It offers excellent control and the right amount of strength without the bulk. It’s an excellent complement to a larger set or a great primary set for homeowners and bike mechanics. The value for a 4-piece set of this quality is very high.
Best For
Motorcycle repair, small engine work, appliance repair, and automotive jobs in confined spaces (like transmission pans or intake manifolds). Also perfect as a lightweight, portable set for a toolbox.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Excellent maneuverability in tight engine compartments.
- Good variety of straight and 90-degree tips for internal/external work.
- Strong springs and solid one-piece head construction.
- Very affordable and easy to store.
Cons:
- Lack of leverage makes it unsuitable for large, rusted, or stubborn rings.
- Tip diameter might be too large for the smallest micro-snap rings.
- Not designed for heavy industrial use.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: Worked great for the project i used it on. Recommend them for the price!
Customer Review: Only needed one and it operated as advertised. Only problem was the points were too large to fit the holes in my small C ring.

Why We Recommend It
If you do snap ring work frequently and have ever been frustrated by not having the exact tip size you need, this is the solution. The combination of multiple tip diameters, lengths, angles, and the adjustable slip-joint is unmatched in the consumer market. It’s overkill for occasional use, but for a professional or serious hobbyist, it eliminates the “I need a different size” problem entirely. The build quality is excellent.
Best For
Professional mechanics, transmission shops, and serious DIYers who work on a vast array of equipment and demand a tool for every possible snap ring size they might encounter. It’s the “buy once, cry once” set for ultimate preparedness.

- Very large set—overkill for anyone who only does this work rarely.
- Can be overwhelming to organize and select the right tool initially.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: Nice set, the different tip size makes it easier to remove inside clips, it can be done with a smaller tip but it is a pain to keep the tip in the holes while squeezing and pulling. These provide various size tips to get a better fit and hold. Have not had a need for a lot of the angles but they all appear well made and should do the job.
Customer Review: I received my C-clip (I call them snap rings) kit and the first thing I noticed was that of of the tamper resistant circles that are placed on securing tabs to show if a box has been opened was already cut. I have gotten used to receiving open box items when ordering new product, or an occasional damage in shipping.. Upon opening the box however, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t used. My initial conclusion was that whomever packaged it had forgotten to add the informational sheet and added it later. The kit comes in a plastic box, with metal clasps I might add. They chose to make sure they were a bit more sturdy than some of the boxed tool sets I have purchased. The added expense is warranted however as the tools within are rather sturdy, and by proxy, appropriate mass. There are essentially 4 sets of the same 3 tools designed for four different hole sizes in snap rings. 1mm, 1.2mm, 1.8mm and 2.3mm. The tools themselves have either straight, 45, and 90 degree what I will call jaws. This means they all can reach the securing points of snap rings either head-on, at a slight angle, or fully offset. And if that wasn’t enough, each one has what I have to call a slip joint. Just like sets of pliers where the jaws can be made wider, these can slip to be either wider or, have on pin moved forward. The only reason I can think of for this is to reach point that is a little past the length of the jaw. I must say that this approach is quite novel. There is a raised portion in each of the handles, and while I have no intention to cut one of the coatings off, it adds to the overall tool’s stability when attempting to install or remove a snap ring. And the shiny liquid is lubricating oil. And while some could consider pre-oiling a waste, it does promote rust prevention. The tools themselves are made from stamped metal with the pin ends being precisely bent into the predefined shape. Because snap rings are designed to restrict movement, there is hardly ever any excessive force involved like you have with nuts and bolts with regards to their installation or removal. The handles have some form of foam type coating over what may be a rubber sheath. And unless I am mistaken, this method of construction fully insulates the user from any unexpected current in the case of a short. All twelve of the individual pliers have locking nylon nut on one side and synthetic finger tightening wing over the bolt head on the other.I have a couple of older snap ring pliers where the head assembly is removable and I can honestly say those tools don’t have anything on these. I am not ashamed to say my older two sets, one still being in the original packaging, are being donated to a handyman I know. I do not foresee being able to misplace any of these. The box itself is big enough to easily see and will fit well in my 8 wheeled rolling tool chest. As far as I can tell, unless custom specialty tools are required to address the task, this set does the job admirably. These are just awesome.
8. WISEUP 4-Piece 13-Inch Snap Ring Pliers Set
This set provides serious reach with its 13-inch length, making it suitable for deep applications like wheel bearing hubs on 4x4s. The 1/8″ tip diameter is a good middle ground for many medium to large rings. The self-opening spring-loaded handles are ergonomic and reduce hand strain. It’s a focused, heavy-duty set for deep-reach applications where shorter pliers simply can’t access the snap ring.
Key Features That Stand Out
- ✓ 13-Inch Extra Long Reach: Designed for deep hubs and shafts where standard pliers won’t reach.
- ✓ 1/8″ Tip Diameter: A versatile size for many medium to large snap rings.
- ✓ Premium Self-Opening Spring: Ergonomic handles provide overall control and reduce fatigue.
- ✓ #55 Carbon Steel: Forged construction for high hardness and strength.
- ✓ Straight & Bent Tips: Includes both for internal and external ring access at depth.
Why We Recommend It
For deep wheel bearing hubs, especially on 4×4 trucks and SUVs, reach is everything. This 13-inch set from WISEUP delivers that reach with a sturdy build. The spring-loaded action is a big plus for jobs requiring you to hold the ring compressed for a while. It’s a specialized tool that solves a very specific problem—reaching in deep—better than most standard sets.
Best For
4×4 and truck owners performing wheel bearing hub replacements, or anyone working on components where the snap ring is set back several inches into a bore or around a deep shaft.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Excellent deep-reach capability for hubs and deep shafts.
- Comfortable, self-opening spring-loaded handles.
- Good tip size for many common automotive applications.
- Sturdy forged carbon steel construction.
Cons:
- Very long, so not suitable for any tight transverse spaces.
- Only one tip size per plier; you’d need a different set for very small or very large rings.
- The length can make it awkward to generate force in some positions.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: Awesome tools, these made the job needed for way easier.,Great product very good tools.
Customer Review: Had to replace an old pair of snap ring pliers after they failed. Looked at several sets and one for all units, decided on these mainly due to their length, easier to use to reach inside my 4wd hubs for wheel bearing/hub replacement. Nice complete set, well constructed and storage case. Much better than the all in one I had previously. Highly recommended.
9. 8-Piece 13-Inch Snap Ring Pliers with Hook Set
This set combines the deep reach of 13-inch pliers with a bonus set of hook picks. The four main pliers (straight/bent, internal/external) are made from carbon steel and are built for leverage. The included hook picks are a useful addition for manipulating rings after removal or for other detailing work. It’s a practical, value-oriented set for truck and SUV maintenance where depth is a common challenge.
Key Features That Stand Out
- ✓ 13-Inch Extra Long: Provides the reach needed for deep wheel bearings and shafts.
- ✓ Complete 4-Piece Core Set: Straight/curved tips for both internal and external rings.
- ✓ Includes Hook Pick Set: Bonus tools for manipulating rings and other tasks.
- ✓ Carbon Steel Construction: Durable and hard-wearing material.
- ✓ Ergonomic Handles: Comfortable grip for applying force.
Why We Recommend It
We like this set because it directly addresses the two most common needs for heavy-duty work: reach and value. The 13-inch length solves the deep-hub problem, and the inclusion of hook picks adds utility beyond just snap rings. The carbon steel build is adequate for most automotive uses. It’s a smart, balanced package for someone who knows they need long pliers but doesn’t want to overspend on a premium brand.
Best For
Truck and SUV owners doing wheel bearing work, as well as general mechanics who need a reliable set of long pliers for various deep-shaft applications. The hooks make it handy for transmission pan gasket work too.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Excellent reach for deep hubs and shafts.
- Good value with the inclusion of a hook pick set.
- Covers all four basic combinations (int/ext, straight/bent).
- Solid construction for the price point.
Cons:
- Tips can be a bit thick; may require sanding for very tight holes.
- No tip size variation; only one diameter per plier.
- The hooks are a nice bonus but are basic.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: The media could not be loaded. For the money they are great. Might have to sand the tips because they are thick. Otherwise very well made and won’t twist or bend. Very happy with the purchase
Customer Review: I needed the larger size snap ring pliers to repair my ac compressor. My 8″ set would not work on ~1.5″ outside snap ring. These had plenty of leverage to get the job done and the tips were narrow enough to get down into deep area where the snap ring. The included set of picks came in handy too and seemed pretty well made.
10. 7-Inch Heavy-Duty Snap Ring Pliers Set
This is a straightforward, no-frills 7-inch set focused on the most common sizes for general automotive and small engine work. It includes two straight internal and two straight external pliers. The insulated handles are a safety feature for working around live components, though some users note the insulation isn’t the thickest. It’s a basic, functional set for everyday snap ring tasks at a very competitive price.
Key Features That Stand Out
- ✓ 7-Inch Compact Size: Great control for general-purpose and tight-space work.
- ✓ Insulated Handles: Meets safety standards for live circuit work (1000V rated).
- ✓ 4-Piece Complete Set: Two straight internal and two straight external pliers.
- ✓ Durable Steel Construction: Built for regular automotive use.
- ✓ Includes Storage Case: Keeps the set organized and protected.
Why We Recommend It
This set earns its spot for being a reliable, ultra-basic workhorse. If your needs are simple—removing and installing standard internal and external snap rings on cars, motorcycles, or lawn equipment—this set does the job without any complications. The insulated handles are a thoughtful safety addition. It’s an excellent “beater” set to keep in the garage or trunk for everyday tasks where you don’t want to risk damaging a more expensive tool.
Best For
Homeowners, beginner DIYers, and motorcycle or small engine mechanics who need a simple, safe, and inexpensive set for routine snap ring maintenance. Also ideal as a backup or “throw-away” set for jobs where tools might get lost or abused.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Very affordable entry point for a functional set.
- Insulated handles provide electrical safety.

- Simple, straightforward design—easy to use and understand.

- Build quality is basic; not for heavy industrial or constant professional use.
- Prone to rust if not kept dry.
Customer Reviews
Customer Review: I wasn’t sure what to expect when I ordered these, but figured it was worth trying them out. This is a nice snap ring plier set. The pics are a it misleading, but the kit comes with two each of straight and angled pliers for squeezing and spreading clips. They’re well made, and they snap easily into the included case for storage. I haven’t used them on tough or stuck clips yet, but in quick testing they seem like they’re going to hold up and the tips seem pretty durable. Time will tell. For the money this is a great value and is considerably cheaper than you’ll find cheap pliers at the big box tool store in many towns.
Customer Review: Pretty sturdy tools for working on my car, the insulated handles not so durable and I highly recommend these tools are kept in a dry location, they will rust very easily. They came in a case so I gave this 4.5 out of 5. I would have given it a 5 if the insulated handles were made with thicker material.
Complete Buying Guide for Heavy Duty Snap Ring Pliers
Essential Factors We Consider
When choosing heavy-duty snap ring pliers, the most critical factors are material, length, tip variety, and mechanism. Look for pliers made from chrome-vanadium (CR-V) or carbon steel—these alloys offer the best strength-to-weight ratio. The length determines leverage; 7-9 inch pliers are for general work, while 13-16 inch models are for deep, stubborn rings. A good set includes both straight and bent (45°/90°) tips to access angles, and interchangeable tips or adjustable knobs for working on both internal and external rings. A spring ratchet lock is a major convenience for sustained pressure.
Budget Planning
You can find functional sets from $15-$30 for occasional DIY use. For serious automotive work, budgeting $40-$80 gets you into forged steel, professional-grade sets like the TOOLEAGUE or Neiko. The premium multi-size sets like the WISEUP 12-piece run $100+ but offer unparalleled versatility. Consider how often you’ll use them and the typical ring size you encounter. A single high-quality 9-inch set might be better than a cheap large set for a truck mechanic, while a comprehensive kit is best for a generalist.
Final Thoughts
Snap ring pliers are one of those tools you don’t appreciate until you need the right one. Investing in a quality heavy-duty set saves immense frustration, prevents damaged parts, and makes jobs safer. Don’t just buy the cheapest set; consider your most common applications. For most people, the Orion Motor Tech 10-piece set offers the best blend of versatility and value. If you know you’ll be fighting huge rings on a truck, the Neiko 02130A is the budget leverage champion. When in doubt, prioritize full-length steel construction and tip variety.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What’s the difference between internal and external snap ring pliers?
A: External snap ring pliers have tips that close together to squeeze the ring, spreading it outward to remove it from a shaft. Internal snap ring pliers have tips that open outward to expand the ring, allowing it to be removed from a bore or hole. Some pliers have reversible tips or interchangeable heads to do both jobs.
Q: Should I get bent or straight tips?
A: Both are useful. Straight tips are best for direct, head-on access. Bent tips (45° or 90°) are essential for reaching around obstacles or into recessed areas where a straight plier can’t align with the ring’s holes. A good set includes at least one of each.
Q: Are more expensive snap ring pliers really worth it?
A: Yes, for frequent use. Expensive sets use forged steel (not just stamped), have precise tip alignment, stronger springs, and better finishes that resist rust. They won’t bend or break on stubborn rings, which can happen with cheap sets, saving you from a ruined part and a second trip to the store.
Q: How do I know what size snap ring pliers I need?
A: Measure the diameter of the snap ring’s hole (for internal) or the shaft (for external). The tip diameter of the plier must be smaller than these holes to fit inside. Common tip sizes are 0.038″, 0.047″, 0.070″, and 0.090″. Having a set with multiple tip sizes covers most applications. For very large rings (like on tractor axles), prioritize long pliers (16″) for leverage.
Q: Can I use snap ring pliers as regular pliers?
A: No. Snap ring pliers have delicate, precise tips designed to fit into small holes. Using them for general gripping, bending, or pulling will damage or misalign the tips, ruining them for their intended purpose. Use them only for snap rings and similar small circlips.
Choosing the right heavy-duty snap ring pliers can make a frustrating repair simple and safe. Based on our testing, the Orion Motor Tech 10-Piece Set is the best overall choice for its incredible versatility and solid build.
