Customer Reviews
Customer Review: This is my third Shark vacuum and there is a reason I keep buying them! They just work, period. My daughter is moving into her own apartment for the first time and wanted the same Shark we already had. It doesn’t seem to still be available so I let her take it with her and got a new one for myself. I do also own a lift away but find it a little too heavy to carry around. The super long hose on this item achieves the same thing and is way easier to use. Assembly was very easy and no tools were needed. All of the components just click into place and probably took two minutes to assemble. I have learned over time that the two included attachments are the only ones I really use and both can be stored right onboard the vacuum. I love that both the foam and felt filters can be rinsed in water and do not need to be repurchased. That being said, I usually buy another set anyway so that I can rinse one set and still be able to use the vacuum while they completely dry out. As for the performance, it works really well. The ability to easily adjust the level of suction right from the handle means that I can go from a throw rug, to an area rug, to a wood floor quickly and easily. The swivel operates flawlessly and makes maneuvering a breeze. And the extension of the hose is great. To reach the ceiling, I don’t have to do any heavy lifting or stretching. The dust bin is quite large and is also easy to release and empty. This particular item might not have a tons of bells and whistles, but it just works. For 95% of my tasks, it’s all I need. And it is a great value! Every single one of my Shark vacuums are still working great, and I’m sure this item is no exception. For the price, it has everything I need and really exceeded my expectations once I used it. I don’t see any reason to spend three or fours times the cost of this item on any other vacuum, when this item does the job. Highly recommended! — Amazon Customer
Customer Review: I just purchased this vacuum and am really impressed with it after the first use. It was really easy to put together. The instructions included are detailed with pictures. It’s easy to transition to handheld. There’s no extra hose you have to lug around or store. It’s lightweight so moving it up and down my three-story townhouse is easy. It’s also very maneuverable getting around furniture and other items. The suction on this vacuum is amazing. It pulled out so much dirt from my rugs that I had no idea my old vacuum missed. I have a German Shepherd and two long haired cats who all shed a lot. My old vacuum could never get all the fur. I also haven’t had an issue with hair/fur getting stuck in the brushes. This thing pulls up everything. I’m just amazed at how much it picks up. Another feature I love is you can adjust the suction. I have different length rugs and I can lower the suction on the longer length rugs so the vacuum will actually move. There’s also a separate carpet and floor setting. Overall I’m really happy with my purchase so far. I will be able to keep my floors much cleaner. As you can see from the picture this was from an area rug. I had vacuumed with my old vacuum the day before. It clearly missed a LOT of dirt and fur!! — Amazon Customer

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: This is a long one, but it’s worth the read if you’re doing some serious shopping for a vacuum cleaner:I picked this up in October so I’ve been using it for a few months just to get a genuine sense of how this vacuum really performed and I am absolutely impressed! This beats my Dyson AND my Kirby hands down. Superior suction, amazing maneuverability, lighter than either the Kirby or the Dyson. ( If you’re wondering why I own so many vacuums, I clean for a living.) I bought this for the house. I have two cats and a husband who’s into Warhammer so you know there are sprew bits and cat hair everywhere and this thing handles it like a champ! I wasn’t sold on how small the floor attachment was until I used it: I can get underneath my barstools so much easier now and my entire house ( approx. 2000 sq ft.) is done in 20 minutes, tops! There is a learning curve, but that’s something you get with any new vacuum. I was also super impressed by the ease with which I can switch from floor to handheld attachments. Some of these other vacuums I’ve used are so bulky and difficult to handle all the small attachments… Not this one! I’m able to switch back and forth from floor to handheld quick, fast and in a hurry. Bonus points that it’s lightweight. I’m not killing myself just to vacuum my house. It’s really saved my back! And it was so much less expensive than the Dyson or the Kirby. The window on the floor attachment gives me a clear view of the roller brush ( yeah, it makes me accountable which is a good thing. It’s harder to ignore when I can see it so thanks for that, too. ). The cord is a tad short, so I went ahead a bought a small extension cord to go with it, but other than that, I’m very impressed! I wish I had bought this years ago. I will never buy another vacuum from anyone else other than Shark again. Good job, guys! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a serious little vacuum. — Amazon Customer
Customer Review: I picked up this Shark Navigator Lift-Away vacuum to replace an older one, and it’s been a big improvement. The suction is strong and does a great job picking up dirt, dust, and pet hair from both carpets and hard floors. One feature I really like is the Lift-Away option, which makes it much easier to clean stairs and tighter spaces without dragging the whole vacuum around. It’s also pretty lightweight and easy to maneuver around furniture. Emptying the dust bin is simple and not messy, which is always a plus. Overall, it’s a reliable vacuum that cleans well and is easy to use throughout the house. Definitely a solid choice if you want something powerful without being overly heavy or complicated. — Amazon Customer

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: I bought a Shark upright vacuum that had Pet in the name. Not sure what pets they tested it on but I’m guessing like turtles and snakes because my dogs hair instantly wrapped itself around the roller brush from end to end like it was designed to do that. Couldn’t even finish one use before I had to cut the hair off and literally comb it out of each and every brush tuft on the roller. Back it went! I searched smeo more and read the descriptions and reviews a little more carefully and decided on this Bissel. It was $100 more than the Shark but was designed specifically to not wrap hair around the roller so I bought it. Very nice vacuum. It’s very well built and everything has a nice quality feel to it. The canister pops off easily and empties easily without having to reach in and pull stuff out. The hose wand also pops on and off easily with the push of a button and the mechanism that holds the wand in place is sturdy which is important with these type of designs as the wand is also the handle so it takes a lot of abuse when using and lifting it and carrying it around. And speaking of carrying it. It’s a high quality vacuum but that quality makes it heavy. It can be pretty tiring on stairs. It has great maneuverability as it swivels and seems to have pretty good suction. Gets a lot of really fine dirt out of my carpets that my old vacuum seemed to be missing. And I’m happy to say. Not a bit of dog hair on the roller brush. It all ends up in the canister and it does a good job of getting it off the carpet. Although with long pet hair getting it up is not the issue. Getting it through the vacuum without catching and wrapping on anything and everything is the issue and this vacuum handles it very well. It has a nice head light that works pretty well. The turbo brush tool is the only one I’ve used so far that actually works and keeps the little brush spinning as you use it. Most stall out if you put even the lightest pressure on them. This one you can use with normal pressure and it just works. The other brush tool has some funky course bristles that make it more like a scrubber and less like a brush. The crevice tool has an LED light in the end that comes on when you attach it. Kind of cool but it has a battery in it that takes up about half the diameter of the tube so this cuts down on the flow. So they made the suction end smaller to match. It works but I’d rather had a normal crevice tool. Also the battery inside the tube means it only fits on it’s storage post in one direction so it’s fiddly to put away until you remember which direction it has to face. More gimmick than useful. The auto cord retract is nice. This is my vacuum for my man cave area but my wife always steals my vacuums since the rest of the house is central vac and she doesn’t always feel like hauling out the big hose and stuff. Fine with me but she NEVER winds the cord back up…or returns it for that mater. I usually find it somewhere in the house with the cord draped over it in tangles. At least with this one so far she pushes the button and lets the cord put itself away…but I still have to go and find it. If you can live with the weight and need a vacuum that can handle long pet hair this is a good choice. It works as advertised is very well built and hopefully that quality will give it a long life worth the price. — Amazon Customer
Customer Review: I really like this vacuum. It picks up and holds a lot. It is light weight and easy to use. Easy to empty the canister. It also does get most of the fur off the furniture. Good suction, keeps picking up even after using for over 10 minutes. Worth the price, but I did wait for it to be on sale, lol. The retractable cord is the best too! That was a deciding factor when I bought it. I very much dislike having to wind a long cord after vacuuming, and with this vacuum I just hold the button and the cord is tucked in. Strong suction, it catches all the dust bunnies. With an easy release handle/wand to get any dust or spider webs up high. I’m happy with this purchase! — Amazon Customer

Complete Buying Guide for Best Dog Hair Vacuum
Essential Factors We Consider
When shopping for a dog hair vacuum, focus on suction power (measured in air watts), brush roll design (tangle-free is crucial), filtration (HEPA for allergies), dust cup size, weight, noise level, and attachments. Cordless models offer convenience but check battery life. For pet owners who travel, consider portability and car use—our guide on the Best Vacuum Cleaner For A Car covers vehicle-specific options. Also, think about your flooring: carpets need stronger suction, while hard floors require gentle brush rolls to scatter debris.
Budget Planning
Dog hair vacuums range from $50 for basic handhelds to $300+ for premium uprights with advanced filtration. Set a budget based on your needs: uprights for whole-home cleaning ($150-$300), handhelds for quick jobs ($50-$150), or grooming kits for regular shedding ($80-$200). Remember, a higher price often means better durability, specialized pet tools, and quieter operation. Don’t overspend on features you won’t use.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the best dog hair vacuum comes down to your specific situation—pet coat type, home size, and allergies. Our top pick, the Bissell 39883, balances power and allergen control, but the Shark ZU102 offers incredible value. For grooming, the oneisall kit is innovative. Prioritize features that solve your biggest pet hair headaches, and you’ll find a vacuum that makes cleaning less of a chore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use a dog hair vacuum on hard floors?
A: Yes, most models switch between carpets and hard floors. Look for adjustable suction or brush roll shut-off to avoid scattering debris. Uprights with a bare floor setting are ideal.
Q: How often should I empty the dust cup?
A: For heavy shedding dogs, empty after each use to maintain suction. Larger dust cups (2.5L+) allow longer sessions. Check filters monthly and rinse if washable.
Q: Are cordless vacuums as powerful as corded?
A: Cordless models have improved but typically offer less runtime and suction than corded. They’re best for small areas, cars, or quick cleanups. For whole-home cleaning, corded is still stronger.
Q: Do I need a HEPA filter for pet allergies?
A: Absolutely. HEPA filters trap 99.97% of allergens like dander and dust mites. If anyone in your home has allergies, choose a vacuum with a sealed HEPA system to prevent leaks.
Q: What’s the difference between a pet vacuum and a regular vacuum?
A: Pet vacuums feature tangle-free brush rolls, stronger suction for fur, and often specialized attachments like upholstery tools designed for pet hair. They’re built to handle the extra challenge of animal fur and dander.
After rigorous testing, the Bissell 39883 Pet Hair Eraser stands out as our top choice for its powerful suction and allergen control. But the best vacuum for you depends on your specific needs—whether it’s portability, grooming integration, or budget.
