Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “After researching for weeks, I chose this Shark for our home with two dogs and a cat. The difference in air quality is noticeable within days. It picks up so much embedded pet hair and dander that my old vacuum left behind. The Lift-Away function is a game-changer for stairs and the couch. Assembly was simple, and it’s surprisingly quiet for such a powerful machine. Best purchase for my allergies in years.”
Customer Review: “I was skeptical about the ‘sealed system’ claim, but this vacuum actually works. I have severe dust mite allergies, and since using this, my morning sneezing fits have nearly stopped. The swivel steering is fantastic—it turns on a dime. The only downside is that the dust cup needs emptying after every room if you have heavy pet shedding, but that’s a small price to pay for clean air.”

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “I researched this vacuum heavily before buying it and honestly I was not sure it was going to be as good as everyone said. I was wrong. The vacuum is stellar. I can tell that it’s cleaning the carpet in a way that it was not cleaned by my old Shark vacuum because of what I see in the dust cup as they call it.. it’s hardly a cup it’s huge. The one thing they don’t tell you in all the reviews and videos that I watched is that the motorized brush rollers are really powerful. I’m 72 but fairly strong very physically active/fit and this thing just about ran away with me. It was a workout to use it. Not in a bad way but still a workout. The forward is easy..but on the backstroke you’ve got to really pull against those brushes that want to go forward. Very impressive results so far.”
Customer Review: “This is my second Shark Vertex, model az2002. The first one lasted 5 years. The plastic swivel component that attached to the floor vacuum literally broke in pieces, a small piece first, then a large piece, then all of it. It would still vacuum, but not stand up, nor could you maneuver it. Tried repairing, gave up. I replaced it with a Shark Navigator lift away. I had previously owned one of those. After using the Navigator for 7 or 8 months, I decided to go back to the Shark Vertex. My reasons were, the Vertex is self cleaning. I have a great Pyrenees and a shepherd Pyrenees mix, a 2 small dogs. I vacuum every other day. It takes forever when you have to stop and clean the brush roll out. I also have a shag area rug, and when using the Navigator, even with adjusting the suction, it was more of a work out and struggle. I started looking at the Vertex model and caught it on sale on Amazon, I won’t say what I paid, but it’s a lot cheaper than what the price is now. Having said all this, the Vertex is worth it. The suction surpasses the Navigator, and it even dusts your floors. Long dog hair, no problem, vacuuming the car, got it. I dont find it to be heavy, or cumbersome. The Navigator is a good vacuum, but for me the Vertex is worth it, even if I only get another 5 years out of it.”

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “For the price this is the best vacuum I’ve ever owned! It came neatly packaged. It was easy to put together. I’ve had it for 6 months now and the suction still works great! Love how it swivels in every direction possible so I can make tight turns at the last second! This is super light weight compared to Dyson! The pet hair remover is amazing and is very powerful! I use the attachments on the stairs all the time. Yes, you’ll need to use the hose for baseboards, but most vacuums are like that. My only complaint is the attachments fall off the vacuum while running it. Not sure how to fix that unless I remove them. Other than that, this vacuum works like a charm!”
Customer Review: “I am a janitor. I have been buying Bissel for the past 18 months. The first, a much cheaper model, lasted 1 year. Then I bought one that was a bit more expensive, by $20 or so. I am still using that one, but the bottom plate came off. It still sucks up very well, but it is loud, perhaps because the bottom broke off. I am using it only for floor 1 and lobby. It sucks up the winter salt crystals that are copiously strewn on the grounds and tracked into the building.Thi latest model is more expensive, almost $200, and I am loving it. It has a HEPA filter — the others did not. It purrs quietly, and performs well. This model allows me to disconnect the vacuum from its base to use the hose to get dust and the like above the floor. It also has settings for floor and carpet. This model is VERY easy to put together. Usage is straightforward. Once you turn it on, gently place your foot on the base as you position the handle for vacuuming.”

Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “Warning, it’s a long read, but I wanted to go into deep detail. To start, I have been a Rainbow vacuum user for so long. I love them and felt they worked amazingly.Next, I have 3 dogs & a cat. One is a thick coat lab and the cat sheds so much as well.Another next, I have horrible allergies and wanted something that would help keep them calm as well. I also have a lung disease and need something that will pick up as much junk as possible to keep them clear. Now, on to the Shark vacuum.I got tired of lugging around the Rainbow and wanted to look into a vacuum that my daughter could use and help out.I found this Shark vacuum and 6 others that grabbed my attention.I dug deep. I read through every review, good, bad, indifferent.I wanted a vacuum that was going to truly pick up pet hair/dander, as well as pick up sand & dirt.I was drawn to this specific vacuum saying pet & allergen vacuum and loved that so many of the reviews said it had amazing suction power.I thought there’s no way ut can be as amazing as most were raving about. After 2 months of digging and narrowing down vacuums, I was left with this one. I finally decided to purchase it and see what all the fuss was about. It came in today and I immediately out it together to the it out.I had just vacuumed with my Rainbow vacuum 2 days before, so I didn’t expect much.Oh….my….gosh…! I am blown away! Seriously, no joke! The picture you see attached was after 2 passes over a 2′ x 2′ area in my living room. Not kidding…pushed it forward, pulled it back. Did this one other time. I was completely astonished! There is no way my carpet is that dirty after using my Rainbow 2 days before! I swore by that vacuum and how great of a job it did, so I thought. This vacuum pulled out dirt, sand, pet fur from 3 families ago, it seems lol.I immediately took this picture and dumped the resivoir since it was full.I was excited to finish the rest of my living room and then move on to the rest of the house. It took me 30 minutes to vacuum my living room because I had to keep stopping to empty the reservoir. I am grossed out that it was that dirty, but so grateful that I purchased this Shark vacuum. The vacuum is super easy to put together. It’s not heavy and is easy to use.I love that it has the large vacuum and the option to break it down to a hand held vacuum to get baseboards and hard to reach areas.I also love that the power switch has 3 positions; Off, Bare floor, and carpet.I love that there is a place on the vacuum for hose attachments.I love that the power cable is quite long.I love that it’s compact enough to fit in my coat closet, but large enough to vacuum the living room quicker than the sport vacuum. It makes vacuuming a breeze. The price is amazing for being a Shark vacuum. This vacuum is so amazing that I finished vacuuming, rinsed the resivoir and filter, put it away, and immediately sat down to write this review.Seriously give this vacuum a try!Your only regret is that you didn’t get it sooner.I will update this review if anything changes.I am convinced this is the perfect vacuum.”
Customer Review: “I’ve been using a Shark cordless for a few years, but had to reconcile to the fact that with pets, the suction and ability to get all the dirt and pet hair is just not quite enough. Broke down and bought this Shark corded vacuum and O.M.G!!! Day and night difference, and the suction on this one is fierce! I was shocked at what it collected on my first go around. I love Shark products, and I’ll hang onto the cordless for small, quick vacuum needs, but for deep cleaning? This one is unreal! I feel like my house is so much cleaner. Easy to put together, not hard to push, easy to keep clean. Im a fan!!”

It’s also surprisingly quiet. For the price, it’s a fantastic everyday vacuum. I do use a separate HEPA air purifier for allergies, as this vacuum’s filtration isn’t top-tier, but for surface cleaning, it’s excellent.”
Customer Review: “We bought this for our small apartment with laminate floors. It’s light, easy to use, and the swivel head is a game-changer. It picks up cat hair and dust well. My only complaint is that on our one shaggy rug, it doesn’t deep clean as well as our old Dyson did. But for 90% of our floors, it’s perfect. Customer Reviews
Customer Review: “I have owned this vacuum for 3 years now. I prefer a vacuum with a bag rather than a cannister that has to be emptied. The bag for this vacuum is great because it does not release a lot of dust and replaces easily. The bags are not very expensive. I go through about 3 bags a year of every other day use. The vacuum has great suction to clean both bare and carpeted floors. You can turn off the beater brush, if needed. (I have a couple of area rugs with fringe.) The cannister separates from the floor tool that makes it easy to use on stairs or lifting less weight for high up cleaning. There are two different ways (length of tool) to separate the the suction hose depending on the job you are doing. This is the most versatile and efficient vacuum if have found and I have owed several over the years. I will have this vacuum serviced and repaired until it can no longer be repaired.”
Customer Review: “I vacuum just about every day. I have gone back to the bagged vacuum, and it is so much cleaner. The wand comes out easy. I thought the brush head was a little small in width but actually turns out to the be perfect size for getting in smaller areas. It has great suction. It is light weight. The attachments work easy. I like that the head that turns easily. I can give it two thumbs up and the value is great as well. I thought I wouldn’t need the front lights but actually love them to see dark corners. I like the automatic change in level for carpet to wood floors. No more bending down to change the level throughout the house. I love the bag light that shows the level of dirt in the bag and when it needs to be changed. The bag is a good size and even came with a bag already in the vacuum. It was super easy to assemble out of the box. And it looks great too.”
Complete Buying Guide for Best Vacuums For Allergies
Essential Factors We Consider
When shopping for an allergy-friendly vacuum, the most critical feature is the filtration system. Look for a true HEPA filter that’s certified to capture 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns. Equally important is the sealed system—the vacuum must be engineered so that all air passes through the filter before exiting, with no leaks that allow allergens to escape. Suction power is also key; you need enough force to pull embedded dirt and dander from carpets. Consider the brushroll design—tangle-free or self-cleaning brushrolls are a huge plus for pet owners. Finally, think about versatility: a detachable pod or handheld mode helps clean stairs, furniture, and car interiors, which are common allergen hotspots. For those with RVs or small living spaces, a compact and maneuverable design is essential—check our guide to the best RV vacuums for options that excel in tight quarters.
Budget Planning
Allergy vacuums range from under $150 to over $500. Budget models ($150-$250) like the Bissell 39883 offer solid HEPA sealed systems and good pet hair tools. Mid-range ($250-$400) (e.g., Shark NV352, NV356E) provide stronger suction, better maneuverability, and more durable construction. Premium ($400+) models such as the Shark AZ4002 include advanced sensor-driven cleaning, self-cleaning brushrolls, and premium features like LED lights. Bagged models like the Simplicity S20EZM and Kenmore Intuition sit in the mid-range but have ongoing bag costs. Decide if you prefer a bagless (convenient, no recurring cost) or bagged (superior seal, no dust exposure when emptying) system based on your allergy severity and willingness to handle bags.
Final Thoughts
Investing in a vacuum designed for allergies is one of the most effective steps you can take to improve indoor air quality and reduce symptoms. Our top pick, the Shark NV356E, balances performance, sealed filtration, and versatility at a reasonable price. If you have severe allergies and thick carpets, the Shark AZ4002 is worth the splurge for its sensor-driven deep cleaning. For budget shoppers, the Bissell 39883 delivers exceptional value. Remember to also maintain your vacuum—regularly clean or replace filters, empty dust cups/bags frequently, and check brushrolls for hair wrap. A clean vacuum is an effective vacuum. Don’t forget to also address allergens in your car; a quality cabin air filter can significantly reduce airborne allergens while driving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are bagged or bagless vacuums better for allergies?
A: Both can be effective if they have a true sealed HEPA system. Bagged vacuums generally offer superior allergen containment because dirt is sealed inside a bag that you remove and discard without exposure. Bagless models require emptying a dust cup, which can stir up particles if not done carefully. However, modern bagless designs with sealed systems and easy-empty mechanisms are much improved. Choose based on your preference: bagged for maximum hygiene (but ongoing cost), bagless for convenience and no recurring expenses.
Q: How often should I replace the HEPA filter in my allergy vacuum?
A: Most manufacturers recommend replacing HEPA filters every 6 to 12 months, depending on usage and environmental factors (like pet hair and dust levels). Some filters are washable and reusable—check your manual. If you notice reduced suction or musty odors, it’s likely time for a clean or replacement. Regularly maintaining the filter is crucial for sustained allergen capture.
Q: Can I use these vacuums on both carpets and hard floors?
Q: Do these vacuums effectively remove pet dander?
A: Absolutely. Pet dander is a major allergen, and the vacuums on our list are specifically engineered to capture it. The combination of strong suction, sealed HEPA filtration, and tangle-free brushrolls ensures pet hair and dander are lifted from carpets and upholstery and trapped inside the vacuum. Look for models marketed as “pet hair eraser” or with “tangle-free” brushrolls for the best results.
Q: What’s the difference between HEPA and regular filters?
A: A true HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter must meet strict standards, capturing 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns, including pollen, dust mites, and pet dander. Regular filters, often labeled as “allergen” or “advanced,” may not meet this standard and can allow smaller particles to pass through. For allergy sufferers, a certified HEPA filter within a sealed system is non-negotiable for effective relief.
